Re-Qualification & Proficiency

How do I renew my Beach Lifeguard or Surf Coach Safety & Rescue Award?

If you have already completed a Beach Lifeguard or Surf Coach Safety and Rescue course, then after 1 or 2 years, in order to keep your qualification valid, you will need to undertake a requalification course or proficiency test.

This is also highly important to keep your skills sharp, especially so, if you haven't been using them. We advocate the importance of keeping skills current, CPD as our head trainer says, 'If you ain't using it, you're losing it', so we advise everyone to keep, active and refer to the lifesaving manuals, resources and online learning access we provide in our courses.

It is also essential to keep your awards valid so you are still eligible to work as a Beach Lifeguard or  ISA Surf Coach.

The NVBLQ or Beach Lifeguard Award is valid for 24 months from the date of your assessment and the Surf Coach Safety and Rescue award is valid for 12 months, so don’t leave it too late to book a course.

We advise booking your requal or proficiency a month before your current award expires for peace of mind. Keeping your award valid is crucial for RNLI work and keeping your ISA surf coach awards valid.

To be eligible to take the RLSS Beach Lifeguard requalification, your certificate must still be in date.

For SLSGB requalification, ideally, you should be in date however there is a 3-month grace period following expiry meaning you can still take a requalification within this timeframe.

Please note that if you are in this 3-month grace period you are no longer qualified and if you are using the award for Surf Coaching your coaching award would no longer be valid.

If you have expired or have passed the 3-month grace date, you will need to repeat the full course.

If you need any advice, speak to us, we can advise on all lifeguard matters whether it's RLSS, SLSGB, ILS or equivalent.

This will add an additional 12 months to your award.
