In Conversation with RNLI Lifeguard, Ellie Wainwright.

Hi Ellie, can you tell us how you went about working as a Lifeguard for the RNLI?

In May 2018 I completed my NVBLQ ( National Vocational Beach Lifeguard ) course with Mark and 4 Elements Adventure in Newquay. Taking part in the course was a challenging but rewarding week, and gaining this qualification has allowed me to become a Beach Lifeguard with the RNLI in South Wales, where I have worked the beaches for the past two years.

How do you find lifeguarding as a job?

From May through to September my days have been spent on the beaches. Lifeguarding has got to be the best summer job I’ve ever had. And in-between exploring, surfing, swimming, walking the coast paths and just generally enjoying summer, lifeguarding has taken over each season.

What so enjoy most about your role as a Beach Lifeguard?

Spending every day with a strong team has led to a lot of my colleagues becoming some of my best friends.

Lifeguarding has allowed me to learn invaluable skills that will be helpful for the rest of my life. I enjoy being able to stay fit doing my job and spending everyday on the beach and in the sea.

Sometimes it’s super challenging, and that’s when you get to know yourself and your team the best.

Each summer I’ve grown a lot. And most of that has been thanks to the incredible people I work with and an office full of rips, currents and tides that change daily.

Thanks Ellie, is there anything else you'd like to say?

Just thank you so much, gaining my NVBLQ with you guys was the first step of my Lifeguarding journey and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I’m already looking forward to next season!

We wish Ellie all the best for the coming season!
